Foods for better bladder health

If you have a sensitive bladder, the foods you eat can play a major role. As experts like a urologist in Karachi explain, you have to know which foods irritate your bladder, and which ones soothe it. Read on to know which foods to eat for better bladder health: 

Say yes to healthy carbs

Healthy carbohydrates with whole grains such as oatmeal, cereals, bread and brown rice keep constipation at bay and keep the bowel movements regular. This is helpful in individuals who have irritation of the bladder due to irregular bowel movements. You can incorporate carbohydrates in your breakfast, like mixing nuts with oatmeal, for a healthy meal.  

Fruits for the bladder

While berries—like cranberries and their juice—are great for overall bladder health, there are other fruits like apples, pears, bananas, and other berries like strawberries and blueberries which are a great snacking option. These fruits are not only rich in fiber, but also provide the body with healthy nutrients, without overdoing the caloric count. As a meal also, fruit smoothies are a tasty treat for you. You can make a smoothie with your favorite fruits like banana, spinach, berries, apples, and oats, or other fruits to taste. 

Increase your fiber intake

Fiber is great for bladder health along with colonic health. Fiber is part of the essential treatment for overactive bladder. Good sources of the bladder include lentils, whole grains and beans.  

Check the intake of citrus fruits 

With an overactive bladder, citrus and vitamin C-rich acidic foods end up irritating the bladder. Thus, these fruits—such as pineapple, tomatoes, and oranges—should be avoided. The same holds true for tomato-based products such as ketchup, chili, and tomato sauce in pasta. For the latter, try substituting the tomato sauce for a lighter olive oil-based sauce, with garlic and oregano for flavoring.

Have a healthy portion of vegetables 

Vegetables like cauliflower, kale, cucumbers, carrots, celery, lettuce, peppers, asparagus, and broccoli are rich in vitamin C, which is excellent for bladder health. The calcium, magnesium, fiber, and other micronutrients in these vegetables support bladder health and kidney function. The high content of magnesium in these foods helps to fully empty the bladder, lower the incidence of urinary stasis and consequent infections. The fiber provides additional support in improving bowel function. 

A great way to incorporate vegetables in the diet is baking them or air-frying them. Alternatively, you can toss the veggies into the pan with some extra-virgin olive oil, pepper, garlic and cheese. 

Cool it on caffeine

Drinks like caffeine are diuretics, encouraging the release of water in the urine. This means increased visits to the bathroom and extra load on the kidneys. For someone suffering from kidney and bladder disorder, this can exacerbate the condition. Therefore, cutting back on caffeine is recommended for such individuals.   

Cut back on spicy foods

Just as spicy foods upset the stomach, they often also lead to an upset bladder. This occurs as they irritate the lining of the bladder, increasing the urgency and frequency of bathroom visits. If you love spicy food, just cutting back on it is sufficient, you don’t have to eliminate it completely from your diet. 

Decreasing the intake of spicy foods greatly helps those suffering from overactive bladder and incontinence. Because there is no direct cure for the latter, incorporating these small tips is helpful.

Get rid of the constipation

Due to the proximity of the bladder with the intestines, constipation can increase pressure on the bladder, irritating it and creating the urge to micturate more often. Experts like urologist in Lahore recommend dealing with this by increasing fiber intake and combatting constipation.
